Research Projects 2004-2005

Select Research Summaries

Research in basic and applied social sciences is one of the core components of the academic work of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). One of the specific characteristics of the research activity of the Institute is its orientation to development in that, much of it is centred around social issues or has got policy implications for social development. A number of research projects undertaken at the Institute have been evaluative and, hence, have had direct implications for development and social welfare.

Faculty have the flexibility and freedom to choose research areas of personal interest and of social relevance. This freedom is also provided when formulating research areas, designing extension programmes and field interventions. A strong linkage between theory and empirical work is another added dimension in this regard.

The funding for research projects comes from various sources—the Institute's own research funds, Central and State Governments, international agencies, and other organisations such as industries.
