Programmes

M.Phil/PhD
The Centre has doctoral students working in the area of Media and Cultural studies. Admission to these programmes is centralised.
MA Programme
Two year, fulltime Masters programme in Media and Cultural Studies is a blend of theory and practice. This programme will impart intensive hands-on training in video production, including direction, research, scripting, editing, camera and sound. The programme will culminate in the production of a documentary and a research term paper.
Other Courses
The Centre contributes extensively to the other academic programmes of TISS, like the Foundation Course, the Development Studies programme and the undergraduate programme of the School for Rural Development. It also contributes to the Certificate course for Ladakh
Study India
The CMCS is actively exploring international collaborations as a part of the Institute’s Study India programme. The Centre offers internship opportunities and customised short term programmes to overseas students, in addition to its regular courses of study.
Workshops
The Centre conducts customised outreach workshops in critical media education, development communication and media production for various groups, including media students in other institutions and thus contributes to facilitating a critical perspective in ongoing professional programmes.
The Centre will also conduct short programmes of approximately 1-4 weeks duration that focus on specific media skills (e.g. Theatre of the Oppressed, Media Advocacy, Video Production, Photography) and perspectives. The idea is to develop a series of discrete modules that enable the students to use alternate and local media with people’s participation for community development. Preference would be given to those with experience of working with NGOs and movements.
Sensitisation workshops for in-service media professionals on specific areas (e.g. critical perspectives on society, semiology, ethical and sensitive reporting, etc.), depending on the needs expressed by the industry, will also be undertaken.
