  • The Centre’s mandate encompasses media production, research and education. The work involves teaching courses in media and cultural studies and video production; handling various aspects of professional video production, including research, script, production co-ordination and editing; supervision of M.A/M.Phil./Ph.D. dissertations and engaging in media research and writing.

Research Areas of research interest include  Television: Texts and Audience Reception, Media Education, Critical Perspectives on Development Communication, Documentary Film, Censorship, Media and Cultural Studies


Have directed several research based films on a variety of themes that problematise the  notions of self and the other, of normality and deviance, of the local and the global, through the exploration of diverse narratives and rituals.

Field Action Projects Nazara Community Image Making project Nazara (which means vista, view, sight) is a collaborative project of Centre for Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Sahyog, an organisation that works with young people and has a School Without Walls programme in two aEUR(TM)slumsaEUR(TM) (Jari Mari and Dindoshi) in Mumbai. Filmography

Jointly with Prof. K.P. Jayasankar, have produced, scripted, edited and directed over 35 documentary films that have won 22 awards and have been screened widely at national and international film festivals on national and international television and in a variety of other contexts. Vibgyor Film Festival, Kerala and Bangalore Film Society organised retrospectives of their body of work in 2006 and 2010 respectively.

Outreach Work

  • Have been visiting faculty at leading design and media institutions including the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Sarojini Naidu School of Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad, Industrial Design Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, where courses taught / workshops conducted include media and cultural studies, documentary theory and production

  • Have taught at the University of California at Berkeley, USA (course on documentary film in India) and Lahti School of Design, Finland (course on documentary production); have given talks and screened films at over 15 U.S. Universities and several Universities in the U.K., Finland, Norway and Germany.

  • Actively involved in designing and conducting workshops in critical media education for a range of groups, including school and college students, teachers, activists etc.

  • Designing and conducting training for media persons on sensitive reporting on HIV/AIDS for UNDP in Ethiopia, 2004.

  • UNDP consultant for curriculum enhancement for the Addis Ababa University, School of Journalism and Communication, undergraduate division, involving review, training and production of manuals, 2006-07.

  • Video production for International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), 2001-02.

  • Active in Vikalp and Films for Freedom, a campaign of over 250 documentary filmmakers opposing censorship in India.

  • Commissioned by PSBT to produce and direct documentary films.

  • Consultant to the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust for project evaluation, in 2001, 2008 and 2009.
