About

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences being a premier institution of Social Science attracts students from all over India, across a wide range of socio-cultural strata. An increasing number of international students too enroll for various courses. The students are all young adults. The campus life is a unique phase of excitement, adjustments and academic challenges. In addition, they face transitions through significant psychological and emotional changes. The Counselling Centre works to enable students make these significant transitions smoothly.

The Counselling service at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences is available to both students and staff and is a free service. It is open six days a week and its hours are adapted to students needs.

The services of one full-time Counsellor and four part-time Counsellors are provided by the institute. The full-time Counsellor is available between 12p.m to 8p.m from Monday to Friday. The part-time Counsellors are available between 4p.m to 8p.m from Monday to Friday and between 1p.m to 7p.m on Saturday. They can be contacted on 5612 (ext.).

The Counsellors help the students in their day- to- day concerns and also enhance their overall functioning. Workshops on topics relevant to increasing the capacities of the students are regularly conducted by the Counsellors.

The Counsellors also maintain a notice board where posters, charts and cartoons pertaining to various issues are exhibited. The e-mail is yet another medium of communication for the students and the Counsellors wherein the students can write to the Counsellors for appointments or asking for help. The Counsellors use e-mails to communicate information about workshops, send articles and even for follow-up with students. This has evoked a positive response from the students. A senior faculty member from TISS coordinates the Medical and Counselling Services.

History

The Counselling service at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences emerged out of a felt need to have the professional services of a Counsellor on campus, whom students could approach for their concerns and who would also cater to concerns of staff and their families.

The service began in 2002 with a weekly visit by a Student Counsellor. It then became a bi-weekly service with an increase in the hours. In 2005, the service was increased to include three part-time counsellors, who would visit three times a week in the evenings. Since 2009, the Counselling team consists of one full-time Counsellor and four part-time counsellors.

The process of Counselling:

Counselling is a systematic process involving the following steps:
  • Counselling provides a safe and trusting environment.
  • It helps the person understand their concerns clearly and resolve them.
  • The counsellors listen to students/clients issues/concerns in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Counsellors help clients to generate solutions to their problems.

Thus, counselling helps people to move towards their goals. It also helps people to enhance their overall well being.
