Research in basic and applied social sciences is one of the core components of the academic work of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). One of the specific characteristics of the research activity of the Institute is its orientation to development in that, much of it is centred around social issues or has got policy implications for social development. A number of research projects undertaken at the Institute have been evaluative and, hence, have had direct implications for development and social welfare.

The TISS faculty have the flexibility and freedom to choose research areas of personal interest and of social relevance. This freedom is also provided when formulating research areas, designing extension programmes and field interventions. A strong linkage between theory and empirical work is another added dimension in this regard.

The funding for research projects comes from various sourcesthe Institute's own research funds, Central and State Governments, international agencies, and other organisations such as industries.

Over the years, through its research in social work, social sciences, human resources management, health systems and allied fields, TISS has made consistent contributions to civil society and the development sector and helped shape planning, policy and programme formulation, foster critical rethinking and development of people-centred interventions. Over the last 5 years, TISS has been engaged in over 400 research and other projects funded by the Institute itself and/or in collaboration with NGOs, Foundations and communities, Central and State Governments, bilateral agencies, inter-governmental and international bodies, and business and industrial houses. A Research Development Cell has been set up to facilitate further strengthening of the Institute's research capabilities; proactively promote basic research as well as monitor quality of research work done.
