AML in TISS, Mumbai:

As an institution of higher education, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has been responding to the ever changing Indian social realities and the consequential challenges through its teaching, research, and field action activities.  Recognizing the immense contribution that Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar has made towards nation building, and empowerment of the excluded and marginalized through his scholarly writings and speeches and activism, the TISS has been active since 2003 in disseminating his scholarship through “Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Lectures (AML) by eminent scholars. The TISS has also made some of his scholarly essays such as “Caste in India” and “Annihilation of caste”, as compulsory readings for all the Master level students attending foundation course module on “Caste”. The aim of AML is to honour Dr. Ambedkar's intellectual contribution to the academic world and to create an opportunity for the academicians, students, activists and leaders of diverse backgroundto familiarize themselves with the scholarship of Ambedkar in various fields and their relevance today. 

The 20th AML: The AML Organising Committee (AMLOC) 2024, which consists of student volunteers and a faculty advisor, has scheduled the 20th AML on March 23, 2024.

About the Speaker:

Dr Shaileshkumar Darokar has a Master of Arts in Social Work (with specialization in Urban and Rural Community Development) from TISS Mumbai and M. Phil and Ph. D in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

He is currently an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Centre of Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies (CSSE&IP).

He served as an Associate Dean – Social Protection Office, TISS, Mumbai (November 2015 – May 2018) and a Chairperson CSSE&IP (June 2015 – May 2018).

He has been a member of the Library Advisory Committee and Board of Studies, TISS Tulajapur Rural Campus. He has also served as a member of the Gender Amity Committee of the Institute.

His areas of teaching and research are - Dalit empowerment, social movements in India and the philosophy of Ambedkarism. His special interest lies in research on manual scavenging and sanitation workers in India. He has conducted numerous workshops and seminars to debate interconnections between caste and inhuman occupations such as manual scavenging. He has also headed a number of government research projects commissioned by the Govt. of Maharashtra pertaining to the development of SC, ST and NT-DNT. He is also associated with multiple community outreach initiatives and community-based Dalit-Adivasi (civil society) organizations in India.
