Academic Writing Workshop (Online)

2, 5, 8 & 11 August 2021

The Centre for Development Practice and Research (CDPR), a Patna-based Centre of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), invites applications for a four-day academic writing workshop online on 2nd, 5th,8th and 11th August 2021.

About the Workshop

There are many genres of writing, and academic writing is one of them. In the four day workshop, we will be concerned with academic writing.

For all genres of writing, learning to write is also learning to read and to reflect. To be able to write well requires continuous practice. To write well is also to be able to communicate with the reader. Minimally, this requires a sense of grammar, vocabulary, clarity of ideas, and understanding of the reader.  Each of these elements can be enriched with regular reading, writing and discussion. Writing has a historical, political, economic and social significance. Writing costs time and requires an investment of energy and conducive conditions of everyday social life. These are often not easy to find. All written works have the possibility of becoming historical documents, influencing peoples thinking and spurring new imaginations. It is, therefore, necessary to not be in a hurry to write and publish.

Academic writing is concerned with the creation and dissemination of ‘reliable’ knowledge, respecting different ways of life, and knowing and safeguarding the freedom of expression.

There are three ways the workshop will try to familiarize students with different aspects of academic writing. These involve selections of theme/topic/question and literature, ways of reading for literature review, and ways of constructing a text.

The medium of instruction will be English. Classes will be held for three hours every day. After an introductory lecture on the first day, the participants will be given assignments for the subsequent classes, which will be discussed in workshop mode.

Number of Participants

The number of participants will be 15.

Eligibility

The workshop is for early-career researchers. Candidates should have a master’s degree in any discipline of social sciences and humanities. They should preferably be enrolled either in the MPhil/PhD programme or teaching in a college/university.

Application Process
