Orientation Programme on Migration (Online)
March 15-20, 2021
The Centre for Development Practice and Research (CDPR), a Patna-based Centre of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) announces its fifth orientation programme on ‘Migration’ on March 15-20, 2021.
We live in the ‘Age of Migration’. Though migration is an old phenomenon, actively promoted by the Colonial State, it was after the advent of liberalisation and integration of markets that migration has accelerated and diversified exponentially. It involves various factors – the state, government, local actors, political economy of new forms of production and labour processes, urbanisation, climate change, displacement, violence, citizenship, welfare, gender, identities and processes of formation of subjectivity, rights and entitlements, and so on. Thus, migration has to be understood as a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon, which also requires a nuanced understanding of various methods that can be applied in studying it. In this backdrop, the orientation course on migration will have the following objectives:
1. To present an overview of theories and research methodology in migration studies.
2. To expose the participants to various facets of contemporary migration.
3. To promote a multi-disciplinary and integrated understanding of labour migration.
Overall, there will be nine modules which are as follows:
1. Main Concepts and Theories of Migration
2. Migration and Emigration in Modern Indian History
3. Labour, Employment and Migration
4. Urbanisation and Migration
5. Gender and Migration
6. Forced Migration (Statelessness and Refugeehood)
7. Disaster, Public Health and Migration
8. International migration, particularly to GCC countries
9. Approaches to Research Methods in Migration Studies
On the last day, participants’ short paper will be discussed by reviewers.
