The Global Talks series, “Celebrating teachers” was held on the occasion of Teachers’ Day 2024. This event was hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. These lobal talks were a celebration of teachers on the occasion of Teachers Day 2024. The three talks were on the global status of Teachers, Teaching and Teacher Education based on three important international reports, namely, the Global Report on Teachers 2024; UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel’s recommendations on the Teaching Profession and The State of Teachers Teaching and Teacher Education Report (SoTTER) by CETE.

 

Talk-1: Global Report on Teachers 2024 by Carlos Vargos

The 2024 Global Report on Teachers, launched by the UNESCO and the International Task Force on Teachers,highlights the global teacher shortage and its impact on achieving SDG 4. It exposes a projected deficit of 44 million teachers by 2030, particularly affecting sub-Saharan Africa. The report calls for international cooperation andinvestment in education to address the crisis and support teachers.

Talk-2: UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on the Teaching Profession by Oliver Liang

In this talk Oliver Liang presents the recommendations of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-
Level Panel on the Teaching Profession and shares insights from the deliberations, which draw upon the panel members’ expertise, relevant literature and the preparatory work of the Transforming Education Summit, in particular action track 3 on teachers, teaching and the teaching profession.

Talk-3: Who comes to to Teaching?: State of teachers, Teaching and Teacher Education Report (SoTTTER) by Padma Sarangapani

 

The 2023 State of Teachers, Teaching, and Teacher Education in India Report (SoTTTER 2023), produced by CETE, TISS examines the teaching profession and teacher preparation based on four major data sets, UDISE+ of the Department of Education, Government of India, the Periodic Labour Force Survey 2021-22 (National Sample Survey Organisation, NSSO), and Primary data gathered through the SoTTTER-23 survey conducted in eight states. It analyzes the demographic profile, working conditions, and availability of qualified teachers across states, urban vs. rural areas, and government vs private sectors. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the sector's status in India.
