In Remembrance of Prof. Vimla Nadkarni

With the deepest sorrow, we the TISS community inform the sad demise of Prof. Vimla Nadkarni, our former colleague, who served as Head of the Department of Medical and Psychiatric Social Work and the first Dean of School of Social Work at TISS. She left us all in the morning of 20th November 2021.

She will always be remembered by all of us in the School of Social Work and in the Institute for her exemplary contribution to the field of social work, for being a committed teacher and practitioner, for authoring foundational texts in social work, and for her kindness which we all have experienced.

Her work and contribution in the field of social work and academia are immense. As we all know, she was also the first President of the International Association of the Schools of Social Work (IASSW) from India during 2012 - 2016. She continued to serve actively on the board of IASSW till she departed as immediate past president. Prof Nadkarni’s scholarship and her leadership were driven by her deep and sincere commitment and she endeavored to enhance the quality of academic training in social work education and practice not only in India but also worldwide.

We will miss her and fondly remember her work and kindness. On behalf of everyone at the TISS community, we express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

May her soul rest in eternal peace!
