Nutrition Support for TB patients

In: News

A unique collaborative effort between Saksham Pravaah , Nasik , District collectorate and Health department for nutritional support to DR TB patients in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra

One of the objectives of Saksham Pravaah project is to link DR TB patients to social protection and nutritional benefit schemes.

In September 2017, Jalgaon District TB Officer,  Dr. Jaywant More together with Saksham Program Officer of Nashik region Dr. Shailesh Patil and Saksham counsellor Mr. Deepak Sandanshive decided to initiate a nutritional support activity for DR TB patients registered in the district. A proposal highlighting the importance of nutrition in TB treatment was prepared jointly and submitted to the District collector, Mr Kishor Raje Nimbalkar.

He took immediate cognizance of it and appealed to the NGOs and merchants’ organisations of the district to contribute to this activity in cash or kind. Mr Lalit Baradiya, one of the reputed philanthropists in Jalgaon and the President of “Ekta Retail Kirana Merchant Sahakari Patsanstha Maryadit,” along with his fellow merchants decided to provide every month protein powder and dry ration (Wheat, Rice, Dal, Edible Oil, Salt) to all DRTB patients registered at Jalgaon DTC.

This initiative was later named as ‘Saksham Pravaah Poshan Ahaar Yojna’.

People were requested to donate on various occasions such as birthdays of their family members, anniversaries and other auspicious days. To this day, approximately 500 people have provided financial assistance to the nutritional support scheme. In last two years, 180 DR TB patients have received help from this scheme. In January 2019, a program was hosted in Jalgaon where the donor agencies and individuals supporting the scheme were felicitated by Mr. Lalit Baradia in presence of the Civil Surgeon Dr. Nagojirao Chavan, DHO Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, DTO Dr. Abhijeet More and Ms Charuta Gokhale who is the Maharashtra Program Manager of Saksham Pravaah. This has been a unique example of synergy between RNTCP, Saksham TISS, district administration and philanthropic organisations.
