Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Hosts 84th Convocation Ceremony


The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Deemed to be University, a grant-in-aid institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India) held its 84th Convocation on 20th September 2024 at the Convention Centre, Naoroji Campus, Deonar, Mumbai. In this grand event, a total of 2,646 students, including undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil., and Ph.D. scholars from the TISS campuses in Mumbai and Tuljapur, received their degrees.

From TISS Mumbai, 95 scholars were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 4 received Master of Philosophy degrees, 985 students earned their Master's Degrees in various programs, and 1,419 were conferred Bachelor's Degrees in Skill Education across 47 programs. From the TISS Tuljapur campus, 7 scholars received Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 89 graduated with Master's Degrees, and 53 were awarded Bachelor's Degrees. Numerous students were honoured with awards for their academic excellence, with the newly instituted Chancellor’s Gold Medal being presented to Vullinthala Jeevan, who achieved the highest-grade point average across all Master’s Degree programs.

The ceremony commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and the recitation of Saraswati Vandana, followed by the Institute Song. The event was presided over by the Chancellor, Prof. D. P. Singh.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari welcomed the dignitaries, presented the Annual Report, and read the resolution for the conferring of degrees. In his address, Prof. Tiwari highlighted significant innovations in the curriculum, research advancements, international collaborations, and new programs launched in line with the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020.

Chancellor Prof. Singh administered the oath to the graduating students, stressing the importance of contributing to society and the nation. The Chief Guest, Shri. Ravi Sharma, Chairperson of the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India (TEMA), delivered an inspiring Convocation Address. He encouraged students to prioritize excellence over mere success and urged them to "learn to learn fast," reminding them to approach their work as a responsibility, not just a job.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shankar Das delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the hard work and achievements of the students, faculty, and staff of TISS. He reminded the students of their responsibility to use their acquired knowledge and skills for the betterment of society and the nation, urging them to work towards the vision of India as a "Vishvaguru" - a global leader in knowledge and values.

The event was anchored by Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Sunil Santha, and Officiating Registrar, Narendra Mishra.

The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem following the declaration of the Convocation’s closure by the Chancellor.
