Throughout her career, Meghali Senapati has devoted herself to the pursuit of social justice and transformations. Influenced by feminist ideals, she began her professional journey as a grassroots community worker in a conflict-affected area of Assam. Identifying a knowledge gap in working within multicultural societies, she documented her challenges in a journal, subsequently published by the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women at TISS in 2006, titled "Looking Within to Look Without – Journey of Social Work Praxis in Community Development." The publication highlighted the difficulties faced in the field, particularly in the Northeast India region.
Expanding on these challenges in her doctoral research, titled "Gender Rights, Identity, and Sectarian Conflict: A Qualitative Study of Feminist Community Work in Bodoland," Senapati revealed that conflict introduces distinct obstacles to community practice, especially in addressing ethnically driven violence against women. Practitioners grapple with the dilemma of formulating strategies for emancipatory work. The research emphasized the potential of community practice to de-ethnicize violence by creating spaces for women to liberate themselves from rigid identity categories formed and reinforced during conflicts. Furthermore, it highlighted the significance of viewing women's empowerment as both a process and an outcome, incorporating practical and strategic gender needs to confront powerful societal structures and barriers.
In 2004, Senapati joined Tata Institute of Social Sciences as a social work educator at Tuljapur Campus. Tasked with post-Tsunami rehabilitation efforts in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the team developed and offered a Diploma in Sustainable Development, supported by Action Aid India for re building the islands . Subsequently, she was reassigned to TISS Northeast Regional Centre. Taking charge of the center, she was engaged in trainings, researches and developed to offer a Diploma Programm in Community Organization and Development Practice. Her grassroots experience, coupled with diplomas in sustainable development and community organization, fostered reflexivity, and recognizing the importance of reflexivity, she was engaged in developing a course called "Self and Society," exploring the interplay between individual understanding and societal implications. She has been teaching this course for over 15 years sharing transformative journeys with students.
For her undergraduate studies, Meghali Senapati pursued a Bachelor's degree in psychology (hons) at Delhi University, specializing in counseling with a keen interest in feminist counseling, life skills, and psychosocial support. Weaving together her diverse experiences in conflict-affected areas, multicultural communities, grassroots initiatives, and disaster response, she developed a CBCS course titled "Psychosocial Support: Focus on Poverty, Development, Disasters, and Conflict," which she currently teaches.
Guiding the Centre for Counselling under her leadership, Senapati contributed to the development of Guidelines for Psychosocial Support in Karbi Anglong, Assam, published by IGSSS and FADV in 2016. In 2022, another manual titled "Psychosocial Support for ICDS Workers in Barpeta District" was developed. She recently completed a training program for Shishu Sarothi on positive mental health for mothers of children with disabilities, with the manual scheduled for release in February 2024.
Beyond her teaching, research, and training roles, Senapati played a pivotal role in the administrative sphere, contributing significantly to the establishment of TISS Guwahati Campus. Her leadership roles include serving as the team leader in Andaman and Nicobar Island from 2004 to 2006, TISS NESRC Faculty In Charge from 2006 to 2012, and Dean of Administration/Dean of Care and Protection from 2013 to 2017. Currently, she holds the position of Centre Chair for the Centre for Counselling within the School of Social Work.
Outside TISS, she has been on advisory/governing boards / general body / internal ethics committees/ for agencies, such as Asha Darshan, Northeast Network, Grameen, IAG Assam, Special Cell for Women and Children, Dental College, Guwahati and Member of the High-Level Committee on NEP, Government of Assam.
She loves music and is passionate about teaching, connecting with people, and laughter!
