Since 2013, Dr. Rahman has been working as assistant professor at the Guwahati off campus of TISS. He earned his M.A. (2004) and Ph.D. (2012) from Jamia Millia Islamia's department of social work. He is former Senior Research Fellow of the Indian Council of Medical Research and UGC-NET qualified. He began his professional career with PRADAN and subsequently worked with Sambodhi Research & Communications as a researcher. He has been empaneled as research and training consultant for development organizations such as NIPCCD, UNFPA, NEDFi, and others.
